Together they embarked on a several-year journey exploring the ecosystem of wild salmon, the demands that are placed on that ecosystem and the global demand for salmon as a center of the plate food option. What they found (not surprisingly) is a global economy and a worldwide human population growing like never before and in turn creating an unsustainable demand for one of nature's greatest resources.
Taking these truths to heart, they decided to pursue a model of raising salmon, domesticated from wild stock, on land in fresh water systems that, when done correctly, would provide the healthiest, highest quality, lowest impact salmon to the world. In this method they saw a way to make a sustainable food source that would be good on many levels. Good for humans, good for the environment and good for wild salmon.
Before Riverence was born, a life-long passionate fisherman became aware that native salmon populations worldwide were declining. He asked himself a sobering, critical question: “What can I do to protect this majestic beast, its threatened habitat and the critical role that they play in the world ecosystem?”. Perplexed by the magnitude of the issue, he called his friend, a 4th generation, conservation minded rancher and asked the same question. Their interaction sparked a conversation that evolved into a mandate for action.
Today, Riverence has grown into a position with great capability, capacity, and desire to make an impact. We take strains of wild salmon and trout, domesticated over 30 years ago and raise their offspring in efficient and sustainable conditions. We’re dedicated to raising domesticated salmon and trout in a way that produces the highest quality fish with the least amount of resources – without adverse impact on wild salmon. Land-based systems are the solution. Using time-tested techniques, current technology, and forward-thinking resource efficiencies, we produce some of the finest and highest pedigreed strains in the world.
We believe that the ever increasing human population needs a safe protein – one that uses resources efficiently and preserves the natural world. By raising domesticated strains from wild salmon and steelhead trout brood lines, we are growing a fish that provides the “Best Choice” alternative to a wild salmon – an alternative to heavy human uses and the wild salmon stocks that they impact.
Without the caring minds and hands of people who have dedicated their lives to making a difference, Riverence would not be here today. Our team is comprised of life-long caregivers, engineers, geneticists and biologists – all of whom are animal husbandry purists, taking part in the raising of all of our fish.
